Back from Vietnam we see the drunken figure of Roy Terence Burns discussing life, his war experiences and his most highly treasured thing in the world…. This brotherly pair put the world to right, if a little simply over a few bottle of beers and the stars above them. Carter as the simple minded Ray is wonderful, capturing every detail about a juttering man not quite confident nor sound of mind.
In contrast Burns as Roy is the masculine alter-ego of his brother, he is firm, controlling and in the intimate space of the stage he is scarily violent. Yet it is nothing compared to the reaction that Burns gives as his character finds out Ray has been sleeping with his wife multiple times. Lone Star suddenly becomes electric — the small audience gasp in disbelief then slowly there is an uncomfortable silence before the rage is delivered in violence.
Laundry and Bourbon and Lone Star pass an hour each in real time across the lives of three women, then three men, variously struggling people in Maynard, Texas. The first sets up the second, since Elizabeth the central character from Laundry and Bourbon is married to Roy, the protagonist of Lone Star.
Lone Star in fact came first in , paired with another short about injured Vietnam Vets that McLure then extended. Nor of course would McLure even attempt the adrenalin-rush hassle of Mamet in his own ironic twists. Elizabeth frankly revels in recalling sex in the back seat beating any bed. This interaction is a slow patient reveal between both actors.
The similarly unspoken alliances between Elizabeth and Hattie are threaten when someone Hattie loathes — Amy Lee — arrives. He's trying to rejoin the community, but can't stop reminiscing about his glory days. Joined by Ray, his adoring, younger brother, Roy dives into a case of beer while entertaining his brother with stories of his military and amorous adventures.
Roy seems to cherish three things above all — his country, his sexy young wife, and his pink Thunderbird. When Cletis, the vacuous, newlywed son of the local hardware store owner, shows up, Roy's world begins to collapse as indiscretions come to light.
