Such that national media covered the league, they usually covered the recriminations and lawsuits, not its product..
Was the NASL was ever about soccer? I follow the league infrequently now that Minnesota has escaped it, but my general sense is that this is the year in which the NASL lost all but its most delusional of defenders. Fans want to see their team play in a stable league, they are tired of the excuses and unsatisfied with the lack of transparency and insulting blame-shifting. It would be odd, certainly, to grant the NASL relief for injuries that were mostly self-inflicted.
Either way, the NASL is going to die, but hopefully its clubs do not. Many of them are unwilling participants in the current legal action anyway. But good riddance to this prodigal league. The NASL name should be retired, like that of a damaging hurricane. Above all good riddance to the chuckleheads and schemers who brought it all down.
Irrespective of the results of this lawsuit, may they make their exit from the scene. Soccer deserves better, in so many respects. One is now on Patreon. Do you like the independent coverage of soccer news from Minnesota and beyond that FiftyFive.

A New York team — the Cosmos — was added in In , the team added a certain three-time World Cup champion. It also helped turn the Cosmos into a team of all-stars, setting attendance records at Giants Stadium. In many ways, the NASL was the wild west of professional soccer.
Each team had personality, character and characters. The games themselves could be odd. The Rochester Lancers took on the Dallas Tornado in the playoffs but the lack of a penalty shootout meant the game lasted minutes. The contest finally ended with a win for the Lancers just before midnight, with the players understandably exhausted. And while stars such as Pele and Cruyff earned plenty , many players were in it for the love of the game, rather than money. The team lasted just three years.
You had to have that love, that passion for the game. Some were worth their weight in gold, others were such poor investments that teams may as well have thrown cash out the window.
