I don't know. I've read a bunch of a jump titles and watched many adaptions too. There's lots of stupid stuff, but then again, so does everything else.
It's just part of the fun. As for the systems, I don't think there is anything strange about understanding the power levels, but some attacks are whatever tier again, common in battle manga. It may not be the most sophisticated manga, but it serves its purpose.

It has a Dragon Ball feel to it with a lot of action, adventure with a main protagonist with a big appetite. However it does stand out from other battle shonen because it doesn't focus on fighting tournaments well from up to the point I read but mainly focuses on hunting different exotic animals in order to prepare the best dishes. I stomached chapters of garbagetaill before I realized it was going nowhere, and you cant even get pasted 3 episodes seemsgood.

So it wasn't marketed or syndicated in north America like other shows such as One Piece or Pokemon. If you don't like the anime at least give the Toriko Manga a try.
